Our Story

Welcome to Our Story at The Swayambhu, a tale woven with threads of resilience, compassion, and a deep reverence for Nepalese heritage. Our journey traces back to the fateful year of 2015 when Nepal was shaken to its core by a devastating earthquake. In the aftermath of tragedy, I, Raj, found myself at a crossroads, searching for a way to make a meaningful difference.

Joined by a dear high school friend residing in Boston, we embarked on a mission to aid the earthquake victims. We turned to the rich tradition of Nepalese handicrafts, seeking to raise funds by bringing these treasures to the world stage. Little did we know, this endeavor would spark a profound connection to our homeland's cultural legacy, igniting a passion that would shape the course of our lives. As we delved deeper into the world of Nepalese craftsmanship, each artifact became a portal to the stories, spirituality, and traditions of our beloved Nepal. What began as a humble effort to aid those in need blossomed into a profound journey of discovery and rediscovery.

Eager to make a lasting impact, we established our own workshop in the Kathmandu Valley, collaborating with local artisans and women's groups. Together, we breathed life into centuries-old traditions, empowering communities and preserving cultural heritage in the wake of adversity.

However, fate had another chapter in store for us. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to shutter our workshop and, eventually, our business in the United States. Yet, amidst uncertainty, a glimmer of hope emerged.

Settling in North Carolina amid the pandemic's upheaval, I found solace in the quiet moments of reflection. Surrounded by remnants of our past endeavors, I realized that our journey was far from over. The dormant passion for sharing knowledge and celebrating cultural heritage stirred within me once more. With renewed purpose, I dusted off our remaining inventory and ventured into local events, reconnecting with the joy of sharing Nepal's rich traditions. It was then that the seed of The Swayambhu was planted, its name embodying the essence of self-creation and existence, reflecting my journey of cultural rediscovery. And The Swayambhu-nath is one of the most revered temple by both Hindus and Buddhist in Nepal and it is connected with the history of origin of Kathmandu Valley and Nepal. Thus allowing me to retell a long history of cultural, traditional and spiritual expression of Nepal that has been expressed in these Handicrafts.

At The Swayambhu, we believe in more than just commerce; we are stewards of a sacred legacy, entrusted with the task of sharing millennia of wisdom and insight embedded within each handcrafted masterpiece.

Thank you for joining us on this extraordinary odyssey, where every purchase supports not only the artisans of Nepal but also the timeless traditions that bind us together as a global community. Together, let us continue to honor the past, celebrate the present, and illuminate the path forward with the light of Nepalese cultural and spiritual wisdom.
