Ganesha, also known as Ganapati or Vinayaka, is one of the most beloved and widely worshipped deities in Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism. He is easily recognizable by his distinct appearance with the head of an elephant and a portly human body. Ganesha is revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of intellect, wisdom, and learning, and the deity of new beginnings. He is often invoked at the beginning of rituals, ceremonies, and important endeavors.
According to Hindu mythology, Ganesha's elephant head was bestowed upon him by Lord Shiva, his father. The story goes that when Ganesha guarded the entrance to his mother Parvati's chamber, Shiva, who had been away, returned and was unaware of Ganesha's identity. In a fit of anger, Shiva severed Ganesha's head, and later, upon learning the truth, he restored him with the head of an elephant.
Ganesha's vahana or vehicle is a small mouse or rat, known as Mushika. Despite its small size, Ganesha rides Mushika with great grace and authority, symbolizing his ability to control even the tiniest and most unpredictable aspects of life.
